i signed on (albeit, a little late) for this years blog action day after seeing the badge and reading a post from Kellie at 74 lime lane
blog action day is an initiative to get bloggers around the world to unite and promote an important issue. this year that issue is climate change.
i don't believe that as an individual i can affect change by what i do or say to any great degree, however the strength of promoting an idea and a cause is in numbers and if i make up one in a group of hundreds, thousands or millions then i have made a difference.
as a family we are committed to the idea of doing all that we can to affect change in a positive way for our beautiful world. i feel that we owe it to ourselves::because i haven't seen enough of the world and we owe it to our children and their children.
and so here is my list of what we do. you might see something that you can do and then together we have taken a step in the right direction.
:: we have put in rain water tanks which we are in the process of having hooked up to our laundry and toilets
:: we encourage our kids to use the bath rather than the shower because our bathwater drains directly onto the garden
:: we compost all organic waste including paper
:: we have a paper shredder that we use to shred paper for garden mulch and compost
:: we collect all of our run off water to use in the garden or laundry
:: our grey water is plumbed to drain onto the garden
:: we shop at the market and don't use plastic bags, we shop for greens from an organic stall where they encourage use of paper bags which we then use to line our bench-top compost bin
:: i try not to use plastic wrap, especially in kids lunch boxes
:: we try to keep the heater and air conditioner off or down
:: i volunteer for our local walking school bus-a fantastic initiative to get kids walking to school
:: we no longer use our open fires
:: i walk rather than drive whenever i can
:: we don't ever rinse dishes and we don't let anyone else do it in our home
:: i take a bag with me when i walk and pick up rubbish along the way, we do the same at the beach
:: i thrift my craft supplies when i can
:: my sister and i have a small business making clothes and gifts for children using recycled vintage linen
:: i always try to buy handmade
:: we try very hard to teach our children a better way
these are small steps but if we all take a few small steps together we may leap into a brighter future together.

what a great idea! I learned in Girl Scouts to "always leave it cleaner than you found it".
Thanks again for participating in Blog Action Day. I'll be posting a round-up and our thank-yous later today.
