as a small girl i remember my grandmother and my mum having many pieces of souvenir linen. there were lots of tasmania tea towels and australia tablecloths and even some native bird placemats. i was never very keen on them. i always thought that they were a bit brown and kitsch.
in recent years i have developed a bit of a passion (and a sizable collection) of the vintage beauties. they don't remain intact for very long when they find their way into my cottage in the garden. it's snip, snip and before you can say "waltzing matilda", they have been refashioned into a pair of baby shoes or a skirt or even a handbag for a sweet wee girl
this weekend i spent some "me time", in the cottage in the garden making a cute little australiana tote out of a tablecloth that had seen many meals and better days.
i planned this project during our caravan adventure. I had quite a lot of fun "yarn bombing", the odd tree or termite mound along the road and decided that each time we do a long haul drive i will make a little something to leave my mark on the side of the road. it seemed to me that a purpose made bag was in order.
australiana was an obvious choice. add to that a hand embroidered vintage doily refashioned into a pocket for hooky hooks and snippy scissors. fill her up with scraps of wool and i'm off. the bag will live in the car ready for an unsuspecting tree, fence, anthill well whatever needs dressing really.
bombs away.

Ha ha! What a great idea. You will always be prepared to whip up a crochet bikini whenever the opportunity presents itself!
